Winnie Ruth Judd: The Trunk Murders Classic Edition

J. Dwight Dobkins and Robert J. Hendricks

This is a re-release of Winnie Ruth Judd: The Trunk Murders by J. Dwight Dobkins and Robert J. Hendricks.  First published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1973, this book enjoyed an 18-month run in the Doubleday Bargain Book Club, and has been optioned six times as a possible film.  This well-regarded true crime book established Dobkins and Hendricks as the experts on the notorious Trunk Murders case.

The publicist for Grosset & Dunlap wrote:

“Two crack journalists have unearthed the incredible facts involving the most astonishing crime of the century.”  Attempting to describe why this was “the crime of passion that stunned a nation,” the publisher’s news release touched on some of the issues that this first comprehensive book about the case would address:

Phoenix, Arizona in 1931 was the scene of this grisly murder…the gruesome remains of two women were discovered in trunks leaking blood.  The slayer proved to be none other than their friend, Winnie Ruth Judd—The Tiger Woman…as she was referred to in headlines across the country.  Mysteries involving the case were whispered about for decades.  What made Winnie do it?  Was she involved with an “accomplice,” a rich Phoenix businessman? ...How did she manage to cop an insanity plea, spending 34 years in jail and a mental institution instead of facing the hangman’s noose?

Here are the answers—plus all her hair-raising escapes, sensational trials and last strange recapture years later, involving another brutal, still unsolved murder.

Reviews of Dobkins’ and Hendricks’ 1973 book and editorial comment from around the country reflected the public’s continuing fascination with this case:

_“Sound like fiction?  It’s all true.  That’s what makes this book so fascinating.”—Denver Post

“Most grisly crime of the century.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Story of Tiger Woman fascinating.”—Indianapolis News

“...the authors have turned her bizarre legal case into an engrossing story.”—Atlanta Journal Constitution

“A real-life chiller.”—Palo Alto Times

“Book on Trunk Murders captures attention of public.”—Portland Oregonian
“Their book is a job well done in newspaper reporter style.”
—Oklahoma City Oklahoman
